Alison Berns was born in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, on May 26, 1954. She met Howard Stern when they were both undergraduate students at Boston University. While in school, Howard cast Alison in a student film he made about Transcendental Meditation. He would later write in his book that he knew within a week that they would marry.

They married on June 4, 1978 at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline, Massachusetts.

In 1983, they welcomed their first of what would become three daughters, Emily. They had their second daughter, Debra Jennifer, in 1986, and their third daughter, Ashley Jade, in 1993. While they were married, she appeared in many of his projects, including "Negligee and Underpants," "U.S. Open Sores," and "Private Parts." She also regularly appeared on his show, "The Howard Stern Show."

Howard and Alison separated in October 1999. After separating, he moved from their former marital home in Old Westbury, New York to a 4,000-square-foot apartment in Millenium Tower on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He purchased that apartment in 1998 for $4.9 million.
