Born David Marvin Blake on January 18, 1970, in Compton, California, he entered the world of music in the late '80s under the stage name DJ Quik that refers to his ability to produce records in a relatively short time. Initially, he compiled self-made mix tapes that featured fellow rappers AMG, 2nd II None and Hi-C. This work helped him sign to Priority Records and made his debut with Quik Is the Name (1990).
The album turned out to be a success as it went platinum and spawned two hits: Tonite and Born and Raised in Compton. But neither of his future releases (Balance and Options (2000), Under tha Influence (2002), Trauma (2005) and The Book of David (2011)) succeeded to resurrect his commercial standing.
